At 6.30 a.m. on Sunday morning, Palestinian eyewitnesses saw two settlers set fire to the barley harvested from three dunams of land in the Munaizel area of the South Hebron Hills.
The targeted land, belonging to Mohammed Akel Ismael, is located to the east of the Susiya settlement. According to Ismael, “the settlers ran away to Susiya when we discovered this vandalism”, adding that each year settlers in the area burn or damage his crops during harvest time.
Ismael told the Alternative Information Center that “we know the settlers in cooperation with the Israeli army want us to leave our land so it will be easier for them to confiscate and settle it”.
Ismael and other Palestinian farmers have known for a long time what the European Union only recently reported: how settlers in the West Bank are conducting a systematic campaign of violence against Palestinian farmers, with Israeli authorities turning a blind eye.
The Guardian newspaper reported on 21 March that confidential reports from EU officials noted that the settler campaign of intimidation is targeted primarily at Palestinian farmers and their livelihood, outlining that settlers damaged or destroyed Palestinian olive groves and fields.
